GloBE Information Return
Educational orientation to the GloBE Information Return (GIR) — purpose, typical content themes, process implications, and how structured data supports filing readiness.
Definition
The GloBE Information Return (GIR) is a standardized information return concept developed in Inclusive Framework work so that tax administrations receive consistent data about an MNE group’s GloBE computations, structure, and relevant elections. It is an information return framework — not itself the IIR, UTPR, or QDMTT charging provision.
Domestic filing portals, schemas, and due dates differ by country. This article does not publish a universal GIR calendar.
Purpose
The purpose of the GIR is coordinated compliance: administrations need structured visibility into Safe Harbour claims, jurisdictional computations, and group organization without each jurisdiction inventing an incompatible data model. For groups, the GIR creates a practical requirement to keep a single reconciled working dataset that can feed both internal packs and external filings.
Inputs / content themes
At a high level, GIR-oriented content relates to general group information and structure; jurisdictional computations and ETR / top-up concepts; Safe Harbour claims and elections; and other data elements defined in Inclusive Framework GIR materials and local filing rules. Exact XML/JSON schemas and field lists must be taken from current official releases and domestic guidance — not from marketing summaries.
Process formula (operational)
There is no tax formula unique to the GIR; the operational formula is: reconciled calculation pack → validated data model → jurisdiction-specific filing instance → review / sign-off → submission. Version control between Safe Harbour screens, full GloBE packs, and GIR extracts is the failure point when teams rely on disconnected spreadsheets.
Fictional process example
Fictional group “Northwind Holdings” maintains FY2026 working numbers for 12 jurisdictions. Six jurisdictions claim Transitional CbCR Safe Harbour (documented which test passed); three proceed to full GloBE ETR packs; three remain under review. The GIR workstream pulls entity charts, Safe Harbour flags, and computation summaries from the same locked pack used for the board summary — rather than re-keying into a separate filing spreadsheet the night before submission.
When a reviewer changes Ireland’s deferred tax input, both the GloBE pack and the GIR extract are regenerated from the same source so figures cannot silently diverge. This fiction illustrates process discipline, not a real filing.
Review notes
Reviewers should confirm schema version, Safe Harbour election consistency with calculation outcomes, entity inclusion lists, and that no universal due date was assumed. Cite the local primary source for each filing obligation. Incomplete jurisdictions should be flagged, not papered over.
